The Vaginal Spermicide

A vaginal spermicide is a sperm killing chemical sold over-the-counter in the form of cream , jelly , foam film , vaginal supposition or tablet Each product and form is different so the user has to read package instructions carefully to ensure proper use and maximum effectiveness of the product . The spermicide is applied before sexual intercourse and allowed to remain in the vagina for the next 6-8 hours without douching or rinsing to ensure that all sperms are killed . The vaginal spermicide is

said to have a failure rate of approximately 21 per year . It is therefore , less effective compared to other artificial forms of contraceptive like the condom or pill although this contraceptive method is usually used along with another method , and thus serves as additional instead of the primary precautionary measure . It does not protect the couple from sexually-transmitted infection as it allows for the exchange of fluids during intercourse except that the chemical component of the spermicide kills the sperm cells . There are also reports of itchiness from some users . Aside from this , another drawback for this method is the trouble it incurs upon the woman because she could not wash her vagina hours after intercourse . It cannot be used , therefore , for unplanned sex in the middle of the day or work . It is also not permanent and is effective for one period of sexual intercourse only...
