Introduction

Language is full of surprises . The multitude of words , meanings , and connotations produces numerous influences on our lives . A word can hurt more than the most painful wound . A word has already become an effective tool of humiliation and offense . Throughout years , I have tried to understand how words interact with our reality and how the ways we interpret their meanings impact our lives . The word nerd became the turning point in the development of my

cultural , social , and self-consciousness . For years , I took the word for granted and did not pay much attention to it . It was not before I became a student that nerd into the expression of both a compliment and offense , which envious peers used to judge my successes in life and which also led me to reconsider its negative connotations in a better , more advantageous light

The most difficult discoveries and the most painful revelations happen at times of the utmost nervous tension and disappointment . My acquaintance with the word nerd took place after I won one of the school contests . When receiving a small prize , one of my classmates - my rival during the contest - silently said , you , nerd ' That was the first time I faced a new language challenge .
