Paper Topic:

China's gains due to the Cold War

China 's gains in the Cold War have been so significant as to lead some to infer that this country was the real winner in the War as opposed to the popular view cherished by Americans that the victory was theirs

First , China became one of the most attractive countries for investment following the Cold War . It preserved the political stability lost by Eastern Europe . That conditioned the rise in foreign investments that flooded into China . The following figures are revealing : since 1990 private foreign investments into the Chinese economy have a trillion

dollars . Any other country except the US has received less This is approximately one-third of all investments made in all emerging economies in the period 1990-2000 . In 2000 , according to UNCTAD statistics , China 's share of multinationals ' investments into developing world rose to reach 44 . These numbers give ground to assert that China may in fact betaking jobs from other countries , not excluding the US (Djurdjevic 2001

Second , with the fall of communism the Soviet military presence in Asia is no more . The USSR broke up , leaving the Central Asian republics on their own , which makes them turn to China in the search for a strong state to support them . The collapse of the Soviet Union had a negative impact on Vietnam , reducing its influence in Southeast Asia , and India reducing its influence in Southern Asia . Vietnam 's dream of controlling Indochina had to disappear in the wake of the annihilation of the Soviet military presence in the region . Vietnam had to withdraw from Cambodia that ended up in the Chinese sphere of influence (Munro 1994

The old division of the Asian region into communist and non-communist states has given way to the new landscape where the countries are divided into peninsular and archipelagic . Archipelagic Southeast Asia that includes Indonesia , Singapore , Malaysia , Brunei , and the Philippines is concerned about the rise of the Chinese military ambitions in the South China Sea . Peninsular Southeast Asia that comprises Burma , Vietnam , Laos , Cambodia , and Thailand will probably eventually be subordinated to the Chinese influence although Vietnam is likely to offer some resistance (Munro 1994

China 's relations with Taiwan remain strained with China threatening with military intervention in case Taiwan proclaims itself an independent country it de facto is . However , the relations between the two entities have improved considerably since decades ago , and military clashes seem unlikely (Nolt 2000

Japanese political and business leaders have been following a lenient policy towards China , that of engagement , with growing aid , trade , and investment levels , in an attempt to minimize Sino-Japanese conflict This policy was caused by the increase in military power shown by China (Munro 1994

China came to view itself as an important player on the political arena back in the times of the Cold War . The emergence of the People 's Republic of China in the 1940s marked the appearance of the new revolutionary country that was the third center of power between the US and the USSR , thus both Cold War heavyweights had to seek the benevolence of China in to win in the war . Mao-Tsetsung 's intermediate zone " theory referred to "oppressed " non-Western countries including China , as a vast "intermediate zone " that had to come under control of Western imperialists before they could launch a war on the Soviet Union (Jian 2001

The U .S .-China rapprochement of 1971-89 was caused by the common opposition to the Soviet Union but was stalled after the bloody massacre the Chinese authorities waged against the opposition in the Tiannamen square in 1989 (Nolt 2000 . Anyway , both East and West in the Cold War came to realize that China is a country to reckon with

Thus , the Cold War aided China in becoming an emerging superpower to the extent that now with Russia still weak in the economic and military respect the speculations as to a new cold war project the two rivals to be China and US . Hopefully , this confrontation will be avoided . Works cited
