Colin Campbell and his son Thomas M . Campbell II . They surveyed about 6 ,500 adults in more than 2 ,500 counties in rural China and Taiwan and made a comprehensive study of the connection between diseases and lifestyle . The study also compared the effects of diets rich in plant-based foods with that of diets rich in animal-based foods on

the health of people . Based on these findings Dr Campbell came to the conclusion that "People who ate the most animal-based foods got the most chronic disease . People who ate the most plant-based foods were the healthiest and tended to avoid chronic disease (Campbell , 2005 ) It was clear from the findings that there was a link between nutrition and diseases like diabetes , heart disease cancer , Alzheimer 's disease and osteoporosis . According to Campbell , a proper nutritious diet could reduce and reverse these diseases and curb obesity . He also concluded that there are hardly any nutrients in animal based foods that were better than the nutrients provided by plants Apart from these conclusions Dr . Campbell in the book questions the practices of many dietary programs that are popular today such as the Atkins diet .
