Paper Topic:

China: Geographic development of the special economic zones

In 1992 , Deng Xiaoping , after pushing for an intensified economic development , eventually expanded the open-door policy to the inland regions . Nevertheless , the coastal region still accounted for 91 .7 percent of trade and 84 .71 percent of FDI from 1991 to 2004 (Rui Zheng , 2008

While all areas in China receive a more or less standard preferential policy , it was the coastal areas which get most of the benefits of globalization . In fact , even during the time of Mao Zedong , the coastal regions were taken cared of . Aside from that , they were

given first priority over inland regions when it comes to the implementation of the open-door policy (Rui Zheng , 2008

Recently , however , the government has made some headway as far as reducing the imbalance between the coastal and inland regions of the country . Opportunities for international investments as well as resource allocation have been extended to the inland areas . State control is already declining . However , the government should continue intensifying its existing policies if it is keen on decreasing the inequality between its regions . To enjoy the benefits of globalization , the central government must likewise encourage trading between coastal and inland areas (Rui Zheng , 2008

Conclusion

The development of special economic zones in the coastal regions of China had contributed to the economic turnaround which the country is experiencing at the moment . With the way things are going , analysts believe that China is set to become the most powerful economy within the coming years
