It was after the collapse of the Qin dynasty in 206 BC that the Han dynasty was established . It was established by Liu Bang , who became the first Han emperor . The empire lasted for about 400 years even thought it has been intercepted by two other dynasties , the Xin dynasty and Wang Mang . The result of the interception of the two eras was the division of the Han dynasty into two periods , the Western and Eastern Han . The dynasty ended in 220 AD The Western Han dynasty was first ruled by Liu Bang

who was also known as Emperor Gaozu . He was a rebel peasant who started the uprising against the former Qin dynasty . During his leadership , he divided the country into smaller areas called commanderies and was controlled by a central government . The capital of the country was transferred to Chang 'an presently known as Xian . The economy of China recovered under the leadership of emperor Gaozu . After the death of emperor Gaozu several emperors preceded and continued his legacy . It was in 141 to 87 BC when China achieved its most flourishing and dominant period under the leadership of Emperor Wu . The dynasty came to an end in 9 AD when other families gained more wealth and power than the emperor . Wang Mang took over the empire and changed it to Xin dynasty
