It gained its Independence form Spain in 1817 . previously they were attacked by Inca army under General Tupac Yupanqui . Spain colonized Chile for 400 years but the inhabitants of Mapuche and Chiloe island remained independent until mid 19th century when they surrendered to the mainland government .
