Paper Topic:

Children From Single Parent Homes

When President Bush proposed to set aside federal welfare funds for promotion of marriage programs in 2002 , it renewed a long-standing debate as to what comprises a role model family . But aside from that , it brought into question as to whether getting the parents of children from single-parent families the answer to the difficulties faced in the family and life in general

Marriage advocates claim that children from marriages have better chances at coping with the difficulties in life and are better provided with the necessities , be it material or otherwise . However

, feminists and liberalists , or the so-called diversity defenders claim that single-parent families are just as good as having two parents because the children from these families receive basically the same amount of love and care as children from two-parent do

But it cannot be denied that although single-parenting may have its benefits , the disadvantages outweigh the advantages all in all . While it is true that children from single parents may be given the same attention and care that children from two parents have , it cannot be denied nevertheless that children from single parents may lack some values that only parents from a marriage could give . For instance children from single parents would unconsciously think that their parents are promoting premarital sex and extra-marital pregnancy which in fact are the two most common causes of single parenthood . The issue of the parent 's competency in raising his or her child also comes into focus since the parent not only has to face the dilemma of rearing the child but also doing his or her job at work in to provide the child with the material necessities in life

Women coming from single-parent homes are also found out to be inadequately prepared to face family life . This may be attributed to the fact that most single parents are women and the lack of a father or male figure often results to the children having difficulty interacting with the opposite sex . In a study for example , girls from single-parent homes or those who grew up without a father or male figure were found out to become sexually active earlier than those children from two-parent homes . There is also the question of victimisation and child abuse among children from single-parent homes . The children either become victims or accomplices of crimes

Single parents may also lack the competencies to raise their children in certain aspects . Single parenthood may give the notion to children that faithfulness or the lack thereof is acceptable and perfectly normal considering that they are products of such circumstances although the absence of a male or father figure in the child 's life does not necessarily mean that such issues may not be resolved as other male figures may also help in raising the children by acting as a substitute to the father or in case the mother is the one absent , then female figures such as grandmothers and aunts may do so

Social scientists also agree that children who grow up in single-parent families are more disadvantaged than children who grow up with both parents . Children from single-parent families are more likely to drop out of school , less likely to attend college , and less likely to graduate from college than children raised by both biological parents Girls from father-absent families are morel likely to become sexually active at a younger age and to have a child outside of marriage . Boys who grow up without their fathers are more likely to have trouble finding (and finding ) a job in young adulthood . Young adult men and women from one-parent families tend to work at low-paying jobs (Sara McLanahan

However , these findings are not always concrete as there are other factors that may contribute to these observations such as poverty . But ultimately , as mentioned earlier , the disadvantages of single parenting outweigh its advantages . Although the number of children from single parent homes has risen since Depression , it does not necessarily mean that the trend has been contexts , children from single parent homes may either perform well in life or get married later on or they may follow their parents ' footsteps into single parenthood
