In the global context , America is being respected and hailed for being superior in almost all aspects of life . America is also being depended upon by other countries because of its economic stability . It is also leading the international community because of power it posses . In America , life is perceived as a bed of roses . This is also the reason for the increasing number of

immigrants . However , behind the powerful and wealthy face of America hides a stain of poverty

According to the census provided by U .S . Census Bureau , there are nearly 35 million considered poor in 2002 (Rector and Johnson , 2004 This number could be very alarming if not astounding . And , a considerable number therefrom is composed of children . In the American definition of poverty , children who belong to poor families are not provided with adequate nutritious foods , clothing , and reasonable shelter (Rector and Johnson , 2004 . In addition , some children born of poor parents are unable to attend schools because of their inability to pay for their fees . The medical needs of the poor children are also denied because of the inability of their parents to pay for their bills Furthermore , many children are dragged into illegal activities and engaged in vices because of their poverty
