Chekhov 's 'The Cherry Orchard

The purpose of the is to analyze the play written by Anton Chekhov over 100 years ago through the prism of the psychological portraits and notions created by Sigmund Freud . It is clear , and the argument is still relevant , that Chekhov 's play is analyzed not the way it should be , and a mass amount of implications and ideas given by the authors are not seen by the reader . Thus it will be interesting to see how Freud 's ideas are applicable to the explanation of The Cherry

Isolation : failing to react to something which may be upsetting

It should be said that the cherry orchard in the play is seen as the central symbol , around which all characters and actions revolve moreover , it is the very orchard which becomes the tool of explanation of how and why the characters behave and what the inner implications of their behavior are . In relation to isolation , it is important to note that the very orchard has been avoided by the masters of the house for many years Lubov Andreevna , having spent many years abroad , has come home seeking support for her memories , but she was actually isolating herself from this house for many years not to bring back the pain which had remained in her past . Ranevsky is seen to try to isolate herself throughout the whole play , it is seen through her attempt to flee the play is started through her coming to Russia and her attempt to leave Paris after the unlucky suicide attempt provoked by her lover she ends the play with the attempt to flee her home in Russia after the upsetting events of selling the orchard

She also experienced the same isolation several years ago after her husband and her son had been dead this line of isolation can be traced through the play whenever Ranevsky tries to escape from the things which can be undesirable to her

Intellectualization : analyzing and rationalizing rather than reacting and feeling

While Ranevsky is more emotional and her actions are mostly justified by her emotional state , it should be noted , that the notion of rationalization is also seen in the play on the one hand , all characters can be said to be rational , as the way they spend their time analyzing the past and contemplating on the future , leaves no space for feelings . In the first act in the talk between Varya and Anya it is easy to notice the way Varya reacts to the question about her being proposed 'I think it will all come to nothing . He 's a busy man .
