Charter Schools versus Public Schools

Introduction

In this essay , we attempt to highlight the differences between charter schools and public schools , and advantages and disadvantages that we discern in both the schools . At the outset , we may point out that public schools are traditional or conventional schools , while charter schools are non-conventional schools . Scholars have debated regarding the usefulness of both these types of schools

As we are aware , at present there are numerous public schools , which have attracted large numbers of students for the last several years

Majority of student population in fact attends the public schools , which follow the traditional method of teaching and assessment (2005a ) It is suggested that dissatisfaction with public schools have resulted in the emergence of a movement , to establish alternative system of schools , by parents , organizations , and educationists . It was thought that charter schools could provide answer to few problems that were being experienced by the students in the traditional public schools . The attempt was to establish new types of public schools with higher autonomy and accountability (2002 ) Charter schools are established with the assistance of public funding with the intention of providing non-conventional method of teaching which has led to increase in popularity of these schools . For this purpose , charter schools are given some immunity from rules and regulations , which govern the public schools . However , charter schools have greater responsibility and accountability when compared with the public schools . Charter schools are established after the creation of charter (agreement , which provides for continuous monitoring of activities and achievements of these schools , that are required to prove that these schools have achieved the stated objective elaborated when they were established When it is found that charter schools are not able to achieve their objectives and that they would harm the public interest , then the government can abolish such charter schools . First charter schools were established in 1991 and by the year 2004 , their number had increased to 3000 , which operated in 37 states with 750000 students . However , large number of charter schools is concentrated in few states . Nevertheless increase in the number of charter schools demonstrates their increasing popularity . However , majority students in America still study in public schools operated by the government establishments . Public schools obtain major funding from local sources and state sources . Both public and charter school employees have the similar rights and bargaining power Charter schools are usually smaller when compared with public schools are racially more diverse , are newly established schools and are lenient towards English language proficiency as qualification to obtain admission . Charter schools were supported by different political groups of United States of America (2002 ) After 1989 , there has been reforms in Chicago Public School system which is influenced by the introduction of charter schools .
