Charles Darwin was a geologist as well as a naturalist . The much debated Theory of Evolution was his brainchild . In schools around the world today , the journey of Charles Darwin on the H .M .S . Beagle continues to be retold . The Galapagos Islands may well be one of the most famous islands thanks to the British naturalist . The most important thing about Charles Darwin 's trip on the H .M .S . Beagle was the stop-over made on the Galapagos Islands . It was on these islands that Darwin was

When Darwin arrived at the Galapagos Islands , he immediately noticed the giant tortoises that lived in large numbers in the area . He also noticed the finches and plants on the island . Darwin was aware that all the animals and plants on the Galapagos were from mainland South America . These animals were separated from the mainland group after geological movements caused the formation of the islands . This meant that the tortoises he was observing were supposedly the same species as those on the mainland . When he went around the different islands in the Galapagos , however , Darwin noted that there were distinct differences between the tortoises and finches in one island and the tortoises and finches on another island . These specimen from the Galapagos were also very much different from the species of flora and fauna on mainland South America
