Analysis of the Characters
The characters in Hills Like White Elephants were presented by Hemingway through their actions and dialogues . Instead of simply and directly describing them to the readers , Hemingway used conversations to depict the characteristics of the two . While the woman was being called Jig , the man was simply being referred to as `the American . Certainly Hemingway would not do this for any reason at all . It may be predicted that the man was also being referred to as `the American ' because the author wanted to portray the generality of his character . It would be simply to say that the `American ' can be any other man whose has very generic characteristics . The woman , on the other hand , was given a name to depict the importance of his character in the story .
