Character
Running head : CHARACTER Character is the ability to meet the demands of reality Author Institution Character is the ability to meet the demands of reality Huitt (2004 ) presents two definitions of character : one involves engaging or refraining from certain conducts or words and another views character as a set of constantly occurring qualities of a person . Huitt (2004 ) also expounds that a character is said to be good if it fits the current social standards of what is considered to be moral and bad if otherwise . However , it should be noted

that the common perception associated with the word `character ' will be mostly directed to its positive connotations , moral relevance , or `goodness ' rather than its opposite or `badness ' Huitt (2004 ) goes on to differentiate `character from `values ' in the sense that values are orientations or dispositions whereas character involves action or activation of knowledge and values ' With this , Huitt seems to have subtly ignored that character also involves inaction or restraint from certain conducts or words . With this line of thought , it could be presumed that such inactions or restraints are limited to those actions that are bad or immoral following common perceptions or acceptable social moral standards at a specific period in time . Likewise , values could be limited to those qualities that are commonly perceived to be good at a specific social environment at a specific period in time . Simply , Huitt followed the common perception of character that it should be good

This observation refers to a specific social environment , the workplace , at a specific period in time , the 1990s . Hogan notes that good truck drivers are conscientious , able to handle sociable ' because these traits decrease accidents by twenty percent 20 (PT Staff 1996 . Analyzing Hogan 's observation , it can be discerned that the desired abilities or character traits in good truck drivers are : 1 ) conscientiousness 2 ) ability to handle 3 ) bias for introversion . It should be noted also that the reality in Hogan 's example happens to be truck accidents and the demand is to reduce such accidents . Furthermore , the morally relevant conducts among good truck drivers are conscientiousness and the ability to handle sociability . Of course , in a different context , the same good truck driver has to switch roles and follow certain desired abilities or character traits in the home or with family members . Certain traits like kindness , listening skills , ability to demonstrate affection and others could be important in the home . In the community , a different set of abilities could be altogether required of the good truck driver to meet the demands of his neighbors , his block , his city , his state , his country , or even his world or planet . In this instance , the good truck driver 's community may require sociability or greater community participation rather than introversion . This is a situation where the demand of the community is...
