Because of the problems that the late Republic of Rome was experiencing during his time , Augustus turned to several measures in to solve them . First off was to assure that Rome remained victorious over their enemies , and to do this , he has to come up with a large army . This was a big problem , since Rome at that time was divided because of the Triumvirate . So in to come up with a large army , he seduced the

soldiers with bonuses . He took large amounts of money from the Roman coffers through whatever means possible in to pay for the armies that he would use to fight for him . In to the civilians , he started a cheap food policy , effectively keeping their mouths shut of their sentiments against his rule . He attracted the good will of everyone by giving them the gift of peace . Afterwards , he pushed ahead gradually until he has absorbed the functions of the senate , the officials , eventually making him the law itself . With his position opposition didn 't exist , if so , it would be short-lived . Wars and judicial murders took away the spirit of all men , and those who held high positions in the government found out that the only way to survive is to obey Augustus . Augustus basically offered everyone a peaceful life , and they enjoyed it . So in to maintain the peace in their lives , no one dared oppose him

When it comes to Roman art , it is obvious that most of the works show Greek influences . Some examples which survived until today were the frescoes that adorn the walls and ceilings of villas in the countryside In the aspect of sculpture , portrait sculpture during the period mainly used the youthful and classical proportions , which has later evolved into mixed realism and idealism . There were also advancements evident in relief sculptures which were usually used to depict Roman victories

The literature during that time was predominantly influenced by the Greek authors . Most of the works were of historical epics about the early military history of Rome , including its conquests and the like . As the expansion of the Republic gained new lands , authors started producing poetry , comedy , history , as well as tragedies . In the aspect of music , Roman music were based largely on Greek music as well , and it played important roles in various aspects of the Roman life . The Roman military used musical instruments in to give various commands , as well as ceremonial capacities . Amphitheaters set up between fights used music as a form of entertainment . Most of the religious rituals during those times feature musical performers and a wide array of musical instruments
