The sheer volume of waste generated requires effective management to prevent serious and long-term effects on people and the environment . According to a report of OECD (2010 ) on

municipal waste generation in different countries , Great Britain is a significant contributor to municipal waste by reaching almost 600 kilograms of waste per capita . Although , there are countries , such as the United States with higher waste generation per capita , the accumulation of municipal waste in Great Britain requires effective waste management in support of the goal of environmental sustainability

Institutions of higher learning are at the forefront of efforts towards environmental sustainability . These institutions are significant contributors to municipal waste . As contributors , universities have the obligation and responsibility to manage municipal waste . Universities are also in a position to actively organize and participate in green activities . These institutions hold a position of influence when it comes to goal setting , policies , plans , and practices in support of environmental sustainability . It is only rational that universities comprise a locale or context of studies on environmental management and sustainability
