Introduction

People can be stopped and searched by the police basically because of their race or ethnic group . This practice is commonly known as racial profiling . This act has been aimed at controlling crime and drug peddling . This move usually assumes that the rate of crime and drug peddling is high among the blacks and other minorities than the whites On one hand , the law enforcers have seen this as a way of increasing security in the society

, while on the other hand it is considered as a vice that has continued racial discrimination

In normal circumstances , it is required that a police officer is not allowed by law to use force or indicate that force has been applied in stopping a person without having strong suspicions of the person being involved in criminal activities . Furthermore , the police are also not allowed to search a person without having a strong believe and suspicion that such individuals can be involved in criminal activities . Therefore when a person is stopped and searched by the police or questioned basically for their race , then it appears that the stoppage was not based on suspicion but rather on racial profiling (McPherson Nunes 2004
