In Taking Risks : Implementing Grassroots Community Accountability Strategies , the authors , members of CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse ) argue that grassroots efforts to hold rapists accountable can work . They argue that rape affects a whole community and that it must be dealt with as a community . While their methods seem fairly reasonable , opponents may question their motivations . to support us - institutions that will often respond oppressively if they respond at all - community accountability work helps us to develop a practice of liberation in our personal lives , our community lives , and our political lives ' The group advocates a vigilante approach to confronting abusers and even goes so far as to provide examples of how to do so

While the group 's first piece of advice is to treat everyone , including the accused , with the utmost humanity , they later go on to warn of the possible dangers involved with publicly accussing and trying to make one accountable for abuse . They also note that many times women 's cries for justice go unheard because women are not believed when it comes to crimes of this nature and are often made out to be instigators or deserving of their abuse

Groups such as CARA can really fuel the fire when needed , but should also only be used if a person is completely ready to face his or her accuser . The justice system in the United States of America , while , not without its faults , can and does often bring victims the justice they seek and deserve without stirring up controversy and confrontation
