US West Coast Pollution : Causes and Effects

Introduction

It is a known fact that at present , pollution , together with other environmental problems , has been widespread thus , becoming a national even an international concern . Pollution starts within small units like a city then later extends its harmful effects towards countries and regions . This will discuss at regional level , the forms of pollution prevalent in the West Coast of the United States , particularly their causes and the effects . This also discusses

the involvement of external factors that contribute to the unhealthy and polluted air that is prevailing in this region

It is common knowledge that pollution creates serious health problems but not all are aware of the true causes /origin of the pollution and the gravity of its effects towards humans and other living organisms

The Causes

According to a research made by Robert Chatfield entitled Asian Pollution at the California Coast , and African Plumes in the Mid-Pacific : High Resolution CO Simulations Reveal Unexpectedly Long Transports ' the present pollution in the West Coast has originated from east coast of Asia . This is the pollution caused by CO or carbon monoxide that is emitted from automobiles . According to Chatfield Asia [is] partly to blame for polluting the air entering the West Coast , exacerbating slightly the native smog problems of the United States ' Such is evidenced by the simulations they did in studying this matter . Aside from this , studies show that the West Coast is also influenced by the pollution that are mostly tropical biomass burning over northern subtropical Africa and South America ' Similarly according an article entitled HYPERLINK "http /www .bsalert .com /news /1295 /Chinas_Pollution_Reaches_U .S ._West_Coa st .html " China 's Pollution Reaches U .S . West Coast ' pollutants were evident from airborne particles [that] Cliff gather[ed] at an air monitoring station just north of San Francisco ' He said that these drifted over the ocean from coal-fired power plants , smelters , dust storms and diesel trucks in China and other Asian countries (Steven Cliff . Cliff says that most of the pollution in Asia is dust that is aggravated by deforestation and drought ' Additionally , researchers say that as China continues to boost its economy and uses fossil fuels it and its bing regions are affected by the pollution it generates . In an article written by Alana Herro entitled Chinese Air Pollution Crosses Pacific , Reaches Western United States ' she mentions that China has been pinpointed to produce a climate-altering ' type of pollution known as the black carbon ' Black carbon absorbs sunlight and heats the upper atmosphere , possibly contributing to warmer spring temperatures along the U .S . coast . It arrives mostly in the form of soot and originates from automobile exhaust , agricultural burning , and other sources ' Moreover , such black emissions from Asia constitute 77 percent of the black carbon emitted into North America 's lower atmosphere during the spring season ' Herro claims that China puts up power plants , which produce these black carbons , on a weekly...
