Salinger is widely known for his reclusiveness and this particular characteristic made him the subject of a great deal of certain speculations . One most obvious aspect of the protagonist ' oddness is his extreme critical and condemnatory attitude towards everything and everybody Holden condemns individuals who are uninteresting , unsure of themselves and those whom what he calls to be phony . Holden always have this extreme inclination of making certain judgments that it often becomes very humorous for the audience . For example was when he thought that people are so insensitive that it is likely that a person would write fuck you ' on his gravestone . Holden labels the term phony not to those individuals who are hypocritical . Rather he applies the term to those who are much of a conformist and always conform to the norms and standards . Example of this is a teacher who acts like teachers by taking on another image in classrooms than they do in discussion with other individuals who dresses and act in the same way other member of their social status does . Another note of interest in Holden 's character is his approach towards sex . Holden is a virgin who is greatly interested towards sex , a fact which could be easily proven by his numerous attempts to lose his virginity . Holden got the simplistic and idealistic belief that sex should occur only between two people who love and respect one another , and the sudden knowledge that sex could be taken so casually and could happen between two people who does not feel anything with one another took him by surprise and cause him to be seriously upset .
