CHAPTER 1 : INTRODUCTION
Music education is that branch of education which has music as a subject matter . It has a wide scope of s since the teaching of music includes subs such as music theory , singing skills instrument proficiency , general music skills , as well as music history
It is incorporated in the curriculum in most schools in Europe and North America because it was found that early involvement in music sharpens basic skills such as counting , listening , self-discipline concentration , and cooperation . Music education also promotes the understanding of language and strengthens creativity and mental faculties such as recall
Although the instructional styles in teaching this subject is dependent on the teacher and the curriculum to be taught , in general , teachers rely on various teaching methodologies that have been developed over the past century
Among all the various teaching methodologies in music education , there are four that are most used and renowned in the world today . These are the Suzuki method , the Kodaly Method , Orff 's Schulwerk , and Dalcoze 's Eurhythmics . The proponents behind these methods are Shinichi Suzuki Zoltan Kodaly , Carl Orff , and Emily Jaques-Dalcroze respectively . Each have developed their own methodology based on their theories on how music education should be taught which are based on each of their experiences . Some methodologies are similar in certain ways just as they are different in a lot of ways . Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses . Among all those mentioned above , this research will focus on Carl Orff and his contributions to music education
Carl Orff believed that any child can partake in the joy of creating music . A composer and conductor , he was known for being the mind behind the creation of such masterpieces such as Carmina Burana , Catulli Carmina , and Trionfo di Afrodite . Successful as he was , this did not make him the legend that he is today
