Introduction

The Critical Theorists were very distressed by the domination inherent in popular or mass culture . They were , of course , writing before the age of television . There is little doubt that television is now the very heart of popular culture . Even though there are many channels available , there are still common reference points that emerge from the world

of TV , such as Oprah Winfrey , Law and , American Idol , and so on . With all of this in mind , this research will focus on one essential question that remains to be answered : Given the dominant role played by television , is it possible for Canadians or Canadian society to ever create an authentic culture ? The answer to this question throughout the research will be considered with reference to the ideas of the critical theorists
