ABSTRACT

Each country has interesting stories to tell the world . Canada was not even Canada centuries ago . In 1535 , two First Nation youths told Jacques Cartier about the route to kanata , referring to a village called Stadacona kanata ' was simply the word for "village " in their language Canada 's story begins with the Indians and Inuit who are said to have lived in Canada long before recorded history . They were followed by the French and British who established settlements in Canada , and subsequently , the many other nationalities from various other continents

who have now made Canada their home , and are known to the world as Canadians (Canadian Study 2004

Symbols replicate our history and country by providing visual expression to our identity . From our school colors to our municipal coat of arms our national flag , and our national anthem , symbols ascertain the individuality within us , our communities , and our country . It grants a sense of togetherness and that strengthens our sense of unity and harmony . Hence , from the symbolism perspective , the maple leaf stands as one of the most prominent symbol for Canada amongst the others such as the Canadian Beaver . THE HISTORY

As history would tell , most of the early explorers who had passed through the rivers of Canada started off at the St . Lawrence River . They were astonished with the attractive trees which decorated the banks of the river , and also because of the unique shape of the leaves , which came in different sizes . Some were large enough to the extent that it covered the entire palm of an adult person

Later , as their travel brought them down the St . Lawrence River in autumn , they feasted their eyes on the array of colors of the leaves . Some schools of thought believe that the maple leaf were first discovered by aboriginal people who had found out that there were food properties in the maple sap , which they collected during spring each year , and eventually , the maple leaf began to get accepted as the Canadian symbol by the year 1700 . More than a hundred years later , the St . Jean Baptiste took on this one-of-a-kind leaf as their emblem .
