Secondly , we can learn a basic economic principle by evaluating the Canadian system . That system has , in a large part , been able to pay for itself through the elimination of waste . With no more means tests or multiple filings to insurance companies necessary , billions of dollars is saved that can go more directly toward the health of the citizens

Thirdly , in a universal coverage system people are much more likely to practice preventive care . Critics might argue that people

would abuse such a system . However , the cost of system abuse is more than offset by the benefits of preventive care . Preventive care saves money for a number of reasons . People take less sick days out of work , have a longer and better working life and catch potential problems when they are less traumatic and expensive to deal with . Whether or not the U .S . moves to a single-payer system , a focus on preventive care is critical for the future . Funding our own future will mean maximizing the healthy lifespan of our workforce

Fourth , the Canadians have been able to revise their system as needed U .S . health policy should also be flexible . The government must make sure that insurers are striking an equitable balance between profit making and the needs of the patient . The current Canadian focus on technology and a seamless transition of medical information has the potential to save millions

Finally , Canadians have chosen wisely to spend their tax dollars on health care , there is a great deal of resistance to all forms of taxation in the United States .
