`Too Many Campuses Want to Sweer Student Plagiarism Under the Rug` by Edward M. White

A Plague Called Plagiarism

Plagiarism is like a plague that is spreading so widely in our school systems today . Professor Edward White believes that the problem may be caused by weak school policies , poor instructions from teachers ignorance on the part of the students , and poor time management on the part of the learner

Although all schools have their own principle rules regarding plagiarism , most students breeze through these policies knowing that being caught would not affect their grades or

their records very much Most teachers would be limited to giving a student a failing grade on a per project basis which is quite light considering that this consequence will only happen if he or she gets caught

Poor instructions on the part of teachers can also push students to cheat on their reports . There are teachers who are not able to show students how to cite properly . There are those who ask for reports that do not really require the students to analyze or give their own interpretations on the subject . This leaves students without enough room to input their own thoughts so they tend to just quote or even take some statements and use it as their own

There are students who do not know that they are plagiarizing . They believe that the tasks that their professors hand over to them just means researching and typing down whatever statements or data they have gathered from their readings . Because they were not informed on how to use citations , they do not know that they are actually cheating

However , there are those who really do it for so many reasons Professor White 's example of a student who has been plagiarizing most of her works , did it because she lacked the time

While Professor White seems to be blaming the academic system for its complacency in implementing deterrents to this kind of student behavior I believe that he has forgotten to show what really drives most students to cheat on their research or review projects in the first place

For a solution to be made on any problem , one must understand fully what causes the situation . Plagiarism can be caused by many things

There are students who copy somebody else 's work because they are pressed for time . High school students and even their counterparts in colleges need to have time for recreational activities after being in school for most of the day . Sometimes , the thought of watching television or even going out with friends can really outweigh the decision to research properly on a certain project . Although this reason can also be termed as laziness , it still counts for most of the plagiarism cases

There are also students , like the one mentioned by Professor White , who lack the time needed for such research work . There are many working students who have difficulty balancing their time for academics when they are faced with a tiring and probably physical responsibility...
