California that is now one of the most powerful industrial states of the USA , one of the most populated and diverse in the USA , has not a very long history . It 's rapid development was tightly associated with colonization of western territories , that made unpopulated and desert lands of California and Pacific coast one of the most populated places in the world , with economy , budget and production level higher than in such countries as China for example . The reason for such a rapid development lies in its very advantageous geographical

situation . As it 's situated on the Pacific coast it has a direct access to Pacific region , trade and interaction with Asian world , markets of such countries as China , Japan , Southeastern Asia , countries , as well as Mexico , South America and Russia , plus interaction with other US states that are situated on the Pacific coast . Another factor was Californian warm and dry climate that was essential for agriculture . But all these advantageous factors were not taken into consideration in the middle of the eighteenth century , when the colonization of west had just started and probably California would wait some more forty years to get populated with the end of pacific railroad construction . But the discovery of gold at Suttler 's Mill , 100 miles east from the San Francisco area had changed everything . Within a year the number of gold seekers reached 100 000 , with years the number of newcomers and settlers grew rapidly as settlers were coming from the entire world and especially from Asian continent . In 1848 there was gold extracted on the sum of 5 million dollars , but in the year of 1863 it was extracted on the sum of 65 million dollars . During fist twelve years of the Gold Rush ' history the was gold extracted on the sum of 600 million dollars Besides interest in gold another interest was in California natural resources and especially in its land and mild climate . There quickly appeared farming markets Around the gold mines that provided quick sale of agricultural production . The climate allowed to grow plants that could not grow in other states such as grapes , oranges , vegetables , etc These agricultural production was exported to another states and also abroad . The remote location from Asian markets and other states and growing rate of the population with high demand in different kinds of goods caused favorable conditions for the development of industry . The development of industry was also boosted by availability of mineral and natural resources : iron , oil , gas , etc . Favorable climate in South California with a great number of sunny days made possible the organization of industrial production under the open sun , without a need in constructing special buildings . These factors as well as a growing rate of immigration from all over the world and especially from Asia caused a cheap labor market , high level of employment and a promoted further development of the state 's economy
