European mother country Another aspect of corruption is economic . Economic corruption adds to the cost of business and regarding foreign aid and investments , scares away those honest companies who wish to invest in the wealth and manpower of an African country . This economic corruption , has , all too often , actually enticed European and American companies to do business with their respective countries but as more and more of the world reacts to the levels of corruption and when the offspring rears its ugly head forcing the world to take notice , it then

becomes unpopular , to a hopeful degree , to abstain from investing in said country . However , for those foreign countries which have an amoral approach to investing in Africa , this adds to the pockets of the principal players involved but often times , there is little to no trickle down effect towards the labor which made these profits possible , or the infrastructure of the country which , more times than not , is in dire need of assistance . It has become a stereotype but is all too often accurate the picture of an African president , or to be more accurate , dictator , shielding millions of dollars in his own private Swiss bank account while his country starves and the average salary of a citizen does not exceed 200 a year . In one University of Masschutes research project , its professors calculated that from 1972 until 1996 , over 187 billion , from thirty central and Southern African countries , had been illegally retrieved . In many of these countries involved , what was extorted by a select few exceeded the national debt of the entire country for that respective year .
