In 1960 Ghana gained sovereignty and Nkrumah won the presidential elections and he was proclaimed president for life and the country had only one political party the Convention People 's Party . It is important to note that Nkrumah had been attracted to socialism ideas while in college and when he took over the leadership of the country he leaned towards socialism ideology . , the government was spending a lot of resources in building roads , education of the masses , health services because the government viewed this as important if it was to lead the African continent . This led to the reserves of foreign currency diminishing and the government resulted in borrowing externally . This led to a huge foreign debt which subsequently led to a high rate of inflation . This led to a rising opposition directed to the president and while he was at a visit to China the government was overthrown in the year 1966 . The subsequent elections saw Kofi Busia ascend to power under the Progress Party and the new government was primarily concerned of the rising influence of foreign countries and in this respect the government came up with the alien compliance which was very devastating for the economy due to a shortage in labor . Busia also ended the free education systems and instead offered university students loans . Busia also came up with numerous policies which though would have worked given time made the military impatient and this led to the second coup in 1972 .
