With the new influx of U .S . and allied forces into Afghanistan recently , it is difficult not to be confronted daily with media stories reporting continued unrest in this mountainous country . It is also too easy to reduce the country to the idea of a war zone ' which is largely devoid of the human and cultural character which has made this country of tribes a nation . Rich in history , it was once the crossroads of Central Asia (Background Note : Afghanistan , 2008 but has now been reduced in the media to a country of extremist elements and opium cultivation .
