What is Re-Sampling ?
Re-sampling is a method of making use of repeated samples of data of a
population . The various types of re-sampling techniques include
bootstrapping data , computer related techniques like making use of
MATLAB , and other permutation techniques also . Whenever dealing with
confidence levels , testing of hypotheses and other issues related to
statistical inference , re-sampling is a good solution .
Re-sampling makes statistics easy to infer and differ . It does not have
intense or problematic formulas , rather deals with basic tools like
simulations which are mostly customized by the person /statistician doing
re-sampling . Even data that is difficult to analyze through the use of
formulas , the method /s of re-sampling makes them easy (Re-sampling ,
n .d )
Bootstrapping a term directly related to re-sampling uses repeated
samples from the same data to help in the computation of a statistic .
This distribution of the statistic when taking a large sample size ,
involves the re-sampling process to estimate the variance if the
statistic of population . Hence , the implication of the statistics is
found out . Re-sampling is a method that used in the bootstrapping
technique , when repeated samples are drawn . Usually , random variables
are then or drawn with replacement from the entire data sample in a way
that it is most characteristic and representative of the latter . Since ,
sampling is done with replacement the end sample contains factors of
repeated nature (Cirincione Gurrieri , 1997 )
Re-Sampling Statistics and Methods : Randomization and the Bootstrap
Re-sampling statistics involves many techniques . It involves a set of
rules , commands and basic steps , through which statistical problems can
be solved quickly and with competency (Simon , 1997 )
All the methods involved like bootstrapping , randomization and the
jackknife have different but simple goals . The basic remains the same-
the creation of an empirical sampling distribution which can be used in
the testing of hypotheses , finding out standard errors , and confidence
intervals also . The difference lies in how the sampling distribution was
achieved , whether the sampling was done with replacement or without
replacement . And also , what is the initial sample size- is it greater
than 30 or less than 30 for instance . This taxonomy implies other
approaches to re-sampling that were not ever talked about before like
this . One example could be that of uni-variate (Rodgers , 1999 )
Value and Applicability of Re-Sampling Techniques
Re-sampling methods can be used to estimate the level of significance
for including a covariate when nonlinear data is handled in model
building specifically . The results are analyzed through statistical
inference so that in future also similar applications designing can make
use of this (Gobburu Lawrence , 2004 )
The Kinds of Data for Which Re-Sampling is Well Suited
The kinds of data re-sampling is used for or used in include , molecular
sequences , gene characteristics , restriction sites and binary
characters (Felsenstein , 1993 )
The Kinds of Data for Which it is NOT Well Suited
Data that does have the characteristics of repetition or are not
characteristic of vast factors . In other words , all that data which does
not have a large population...
