Introduction

Companies draw much from the society in terms of resources labor , raw materials , land etc and therefore have a responsibility of giving back to the society . For quiet a long time the companies have been able to avoid this responsibility since the society was not conscious of the conduct of the businesses . This however was not to be in this era where there is a lot of criticism about the performance of businesses in the context of a community . In

responding to these criticisms companies have started to contribute to the society on different levels and interests These include providing social amenities and educational facilities such as schools and hospitals to the locals , constructing good infrastructure network , providing entertainment and responding to emergencies such as natural catastrophes

However the most recent trend has been the concerns over the environment . Many companies have been noted to be impacting negatively on the environment yet doing very little to alleviate the problem British Petroleum has come up strongly to try and address the problem This gesture has been viewed suspiciously by critics who have seen it as a not so genuine signal by the petroleum industry but simply an effort to advance their business interests .
