Business Ethics

In the realm of business , situations may arise that tend to challenge the ethical decision-making of a person . This is often referred to as business ethics (Shaw 5 . This is indeed evident in the case of Hector Valencia , a controller for an automotive dealer . He first started working at the Shamalay Automotive , a small foreign car dealer that is situated at Austin , Texas . However , he resigned from this company and moved to a bigger one , the Mueller Imports . During

his stay in the company , he noticed some irregularities in their operations . He found out that the company 's owner , Franz Mueller , was bribing the regional sales dealers and other sales executives with expensive jewelries like Rolex watches . In doing so , the company was given the privilege to purchase all the cars that were given to that particular regional sales dealer . Hector Valencia was confronted with the ethical issue of whether to inform the appropriate authority about the anomalies he found out or just keep quiet and ignore the situation , as it did not directly concern or affect him . As such this would be beneficial for him because he was an employee of the company . He would gain from the good status of the company in the market , which could be in terms of an increase in salary or additional benefits

In a utilitarian perspective , the ethical thing to do is to report these anomalies to the superior of the regional sales dealers . In doing so , this untoward behavior would not push through and would immediately be dealt with properly . This would be of great help to the small car manufacturers as they would have the chance to bid for the same number of vehicles without being manipulated by the larger companies . This kind of decision would prove to be advantageous for the majority in the automotive industry , instead of choosing the other option which would only benefit him and those in the company he is working with . Moreover an effective car manufacturing and dealing sector would only exist if...
