Abstract

The prevalence of bullying in schools today is very substantial . Given the behavioral and emotional struggles involved in bullying , and the possible long-term negative effects for these children , it is but necessary for parents , teachers and schools to get involved . This involvement does not only include helping the victims , but also , equally important , resolving the issues being faced by the perpetrators Children do not just bully because they want to . There are factors that dictate a child

's inclination to bully or misbehave . Thus , while behavioral classroom intervention in bullying situations is required this must be in line with addressing the needs of the children and helping them cope with the situations they are in

Someone who 's good in every subject , who performs well in extracurricular activities or who talks smart , usually becomes the center of attention Unfortunately though , it is not always about being good that makes a child exceptional . Classrooms today are not devoid of children who make life a little more difficult for other kids in school . Bullying has become every parents and teachers ' problem , such that this kind of exceptional behavior has been given much notice

Bullying is generally defined as a repeated harassment and attacks on other people by individuals or groups (Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System , 1996 . It takes various forms such as physical violence , verbal taunts , stealing of possessions , or less obvious ways such as ignoring or excluding from peer group . While bullying can happen in many contexts , such as at home and in the workplace for adults school bullying has been more of a concern basically because of its nature - it involves vulnerable children who are on their own

Bullying has unhealthy effects on both victims and bullies . Victims of bullying are typically unhappy as they suffer from low self-esteem and fear , and they try to avoid going to school (Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System , 1996 . Bullying affects the psychological , social , emotional and academic development of victims

On the other hand , many do not recognize the serious long-term effects for bullies . Parents are most likely to be defensive and some teachers would just have these kids sent to detention .
