Boundaries 1 Boundaries A successful relationship is composed of two individuals each with a clearly defined sense of her or his own identity ( Emotional Boundaries in Relationships ' 2001 , para . 1 . Establishing our own identity takes time and a lot of effort since the way we handle ourselves is directly the outcome of how others perceive us as an individual . In to establish one 's identity , he should be able to set himself apart from other people . This is what boundaries are all about . Boundaries are not only applicable to two individuals

as stated above but it encompasses all types of relationships including family , business , personal and even relationship with one 's self . As such , successful intrapersonal and professional relationships can only be achieved by way of wholesome rational and unambiguous boundaries encompassing a healthy sense of self . Family of Origin
Our family is composed of my father , mother , brother , sister and myself . In my own family , I have a wife and two children , a boy who is four years of age and my 4-week old baby girl . Ever since I was a child my parents raised us to become independent individuals . As much as possible , we were trained to do things on our own so that we can lead an upright life without our parents . To set our boundaries at home , each of us three is assigned a room where we have our own personal space to do the things we cannot do with other people around . My parents are very civilized in dealing with important matters . Decision-making is done by the entire family , however , our father has the final say if things get all mixed-up . My parents never fight in front of us . Aggression and impatience are limited to their own bedrooms . We were taught not to answer back to our parents unless we need to justify something but whenever we do , we just talk
Boundaries 2
Shouting and word war (fighting by exchanging words ) are not a part of our family orientation . Respect and humility coupled with security and self-confidence are our guiding principles as we grow up
In our family , my sister has always been aloof , somewhat distant and detached from us . When it comes to decision-making , she was always passive and rarely makes comments . I do not know why she behaves that way but maybe , she fears that her suggestions might not be considered or something like that . In my own opinion , she has a certain shade of insecurity being the only girl belonging to the weaker sex . Our family is blessed though that no one displays a containing boundary
My sister again shows signs of being behind walls . She is very secretive .
