Introduction

Boeing Company was founded in 1916 by American timber Merchant William E . Boeing and Conrad Westervelt (who was a U .S Navy Officer after they developed a single engine seaplane called the B W Initially , the Company was referred to as Aero Products Company but it later changed its name to Boeing Airplane in 1917 (Rodgers , E 1996

At first , Boeing Airplane Company started by building aircrafts for the navy , the flying boats ' but later in 1920s

and 1930s it expanded its operation to construct torpedo planes , pursuit planes , observation planes and patrol bombers for the United States military . By late 1920s it was also providing airmail services to clients

In 1928 , Boeing formed Boeing Airplane and Transport Corporation that performed both airline and construction operations . The following year the Company acquired four other airlines to become United Airlines And Transport , which was later dissolved in 1934 due to Anti-trust legislation that discouraged the company to carryout transport and manufacturing at the same time . Boeing Airplane Company was one of the three Companies that emerged from the dissolved Company ( Rodgers , E 1996

During the World War II , Boeing Airline Company built Military crafts together with commercial aircraft such as model 247 , 314 , 307 , B17 and B19 stratoline model

However even though Boeing Airplane Company was successfully producing and selling military planes , its operations on commercial airplanes were way behind those of competing companies like Douglas and Lockheed . This prompted the company to develop turbo-powered jet , which could cross the Atlantic . The plane became commercial in 1958 . Between 1964 and 1968 model 727 and 737 were released into the Market . Other Modern models that were later produced include : Boeing 747 (the jumbo jet , 757 ,767 and 777 (Rodgers , E 1996

Boeing was also involved in development of military transport operations through its division called Boeing Helicopter , which was acquired in 1960 as Vetrol Corporation

In 1991 Boeing also entered a strategic partnership with Lockheed Martin and General Dynamic to manufacture F-22 Raptor which was a tactical fighter for US Air forces . Two years later 1993 ,the company was selected to be the prime Contractor for NASA in ISS . Currently Boeing is in the process of developing model 787 , which the company expects to be released to the market at the end of 2008 ( Rodgers , E 1996

Chief Executive Officer 's Qualification

McNerney , who is the current CEO , graduated from Yale University in 1971 with B .A degree and later completed an M .B .A from Harvard University in 1975 . In 1975 he worked for Procter and Gamble where he stayed upto 1978 before joining Procter and Gamble Mckinsey Company as a brand Manager a position he held up to 1982 .
