African Americans from the Deep South created a musical form from work songs , spirituals , field hollers , shouts , chants and rhymed narratives known as blues . That is the music Muddy Vincent Waters grew up to do and he did it exceptionally well . Muddy Waters is considered to be the father of Chicago Blues and the guiding light of the modern blues school . The early life of Muddy Waters has some not so clear facts around it The blues musician in his later years indicated that he was born in Rolling Fork , Mississippi in 1915 but other information suggests otherwise . Muddy Waters was born in Issaquena County , Mississippi in the year 1913 and not 1915 . Though the 1915 birth date was for many years accepted , the birth date on his marriage certificate and the musician 's union card is reported as 1913 . The 1920 census though registered him as five years old suggesting he was born in 1914 . His Social Security card application indicates his birth date as 5th April , 1915 and so does his Social Security Death Index .
