Gladwell concludes his book Blink through his belief that decisions quickly arrived at is comparably good or is in good equivalence to decisions made cautiously and deliberately over a relatively longer period . In essence , he generally claims that our snap judgments and first impressions can be educated and controlled . I partly agree with Gladwell 's contention . Yet I cannot help but note that the shortcomings of the evidences he presented make me think otherwise

It can be observed

that the form of argument Gladwell used in Blink is inductive reasoning . For the most part , Gladwell habitually presented illustrations and relevant information concerning a vast array of decision-making circumstances in most daily affairs . The author then wraps up his argument by drawing conclusions regarding how decisions are created and how decisions should be made

In the final chapter of the book , Gladwell explores `the mysteries of mind reading ' by using the case of , Silvan Tomkins , a psychology professor at Princeton University and Rutgers . As told by his student Paul Ekman , Gladwell writes about some of the significant portions of the life of the psychology professor . A few of these crucial parts include the instances where Tomkins was able to predict the characters of certain individuals just by looking at their faces . This feat certainly amazed not only Ekman but a few others who directly witnessed the `skills ' of the `legendary talker ' Tomkins who predicted what would happen by observing the faces of individuals

By using the case of Tomkins , Gladwell seeks to establish the point that reading minds can be possible and that , consequently , every individual can be capable of predicting certain things such as the personality of a certain individual just by having a short glimpse of the person 's face . Although the case of Tomkins may be convincing , there is little or insufficient evidence to prove this point

First , even though there is strong evidence to show that Tomkins was able to predict things just by looking at the faces of others , it does not necessarily follow that it is likewise true for all individuals While it may be true that Tomkins has the capability or 'talent , so to speak , of predicting behaviors , the same does not hold essentially true for all individuals . Certainly , Tomkins is a scholarly individual , and that there are perhaps numerous things , perhaps far too complex things which brought to where his capabilities are now . The point is , we all have varying experiences and inclinations , much less interests and capacities both mental and physical . The specific human anatomy for every person is as diverse as the varying cultural backgrounds we have if not even more

The contention of Gladwell remains arguable for the reason that his inductive reasoning simply does not sufficiently hold itself enough to withstand possible refutations against it . In to really show that what Tomkins is capable of can also be everybody 's specialty is to provide an extensive list...
