Running Head : RAPID COGNITION
Rapid Cognition

Rapid cognition , alongside with `thin slicing , is quite a fascinating
concept especially when applied in real life situations . It is a fact
that a large part of everyday human life involves decision-making and
the processes involved are oftentimes carefully executed that it takes a
while before decisions are met . Quite on the contrary , Malcolm Gladwell
seeks to espouse his primary arsenal of rapid cognition where decisions
are met in a flash . In the opening parts of the book , it is apparent
that the author primarily attempts to establish the foundations for his
claims . And his contentions I am convinced - almost , that is .
A large sum of the literature being presented by Gladwell focuses on
the explication of what appears to be a new discovery in human affairs .
While it remains a fact that daily human routines involve
decision-making events , the ordinary individual is keen to using most of
what time he or she has left in order to assess a certain scenario ,
choose the most suitable option in an ethical dilemma , or identify what
is yet not known in the blink of an eye . Rapid cognition , for this
matter , attempts to transcend these boundaries and go a little over the
limit of common human understanding and behavior .
I certainly agree with Gladwell when he recognizes the presumption that
the process of making decisions is at the core of almost every human
institution . The possible range where the scopes of decision-making
apply is immense as the voluminous numbers of day-to-day situations may
indicate . Yet it appears that Gladwell takes a different turn when
approaching the decision-making process especially in times when there
is a strong and urgent need to arrive at certain decisions .
For the most part , the conclusions set forth by Gladwell do not
essentially connect with the major points he has acknowledged in the
opening sections of his seminal work . Even though several decisions are
most preferred to be determined in the quickest way possible without
Gladwell champions the presumption that rapid cognition is the new
approach when dealing with certain events that require immediate
resolution . I certainly do not have anything against Gladwell , his
readers and publishers , and most especially his publicized literary
work .
Primarily anchored on the presumption that rapid cognition enables the
individual to arrive at better decisions or options met through a rapid
approach , the author then falls back to claiming that rapid cognition
should be the latest addition to the set of approaches man has already
created when confronted with the task of making decisions . While it
remains true that certain things fall under certain fields , there is the
apparent claim that `thin slicing ' should be at the helm when tackling
the issue of decision-making from across a wide variety of disciplines
and common situations .
Gladwell certainly emphasizes the grand claim that his rapid cognition
approach posits a great shift from the common-practices we...
