Untitled Running Head : DNA Replication Biology - DNA Replication Name of School Name of Student Genetics has come long way from being an obscure science to the minds of most of the world 's population . This discipline has long been providing food and security to us and it is but only rational to understand a basic concept of genetics : DNA replication . DNA is short for deoxyribonucleic acid which is the carrier of genetic information or plan ' of each cell . This substance is qualified to copy itself composed of nucleotides which are the determinants of individual hereditary characteristics . The process of DNA copying itself is called replication . Replication starts with the helix or coil of DNA undoing itself in a point called replication fork and this is made possible by an enzyme called as DNA helicase . When the DNA coil or the strands are separated another enzyme , DNA polymerase , prepares to begin the process . There is some sort a landmark that the DNA polymerase uses , it is the RNA primer which sets up the DNA synthesis . This portion of the process is aided by yet another enzyme called RNA polymerase or Primas e . What happens next is that nucleotides are supplemented one by one in a complementary manner . The most common nucleotides or nucleotide bases are adenine (A , cytosine (C , guanine (G , and thymine (T . A is paired with T and vice versa and G is paired by C likewise . Example of pairing is ACG will be paired or will have a complementary sequence of TGC . With this brief summary we can now say that a DNA sequence of ATT GCA TGA TAG CC has a complementary strand of TAA CGT ACT ATC GG . The original strand is called the template strand which is the one read by the DNA polymerase and the complementary also called informational strand is the one which is synthesized . These two strands are antiparallel meaning they come from opposite directions with the former coming from 3 ' end and the latter from 5 . Of the two only the template strand is transcribed to produce mRNA leading to further synthesis . Reference Alberts , Bruce .
