Vaccines can be defined as biological purified preparations (antigens which stimulate the body 's immune system resulting in production of antibodies which provide the body with protection against infection on exposure to a specific microorganism (Burge Nardo , 1992 . These microorganisms can either be a virus or bacteria . The vaccines are applied in two forms either live attenuated or inactivated vaccines Inactivated vaccines contain either a virus or bacteria which is non pathogenic but can

cause an immune response in the body while the live attenuated vaccines contain microbes which have undergone a weakening process and can cause a mild infection which the body overcomes through production of antibodies

Based on the fact that biotechnology is a process of using living organisms or their processes for human needs , vaccines is a biotechnology application which uses living microbes (virus or bacteria to boost or activate immune response in the human immune system . The immune response process involves production of antibodies which gives the body protection (Tenpenny , 2006

The application of vaccines has numerous benefits which include prevention of more than 20 dangerous infectious diseases has been demonstrated in the entire population , cost effectiveness since the vaccines are affordable compared to most disease treatment regimes and this has greatly reduced the state 's expenditure on treatment and is a proven life saving method since infant and adult mortality rates have been reduced due to prevention of some diseases
