Having been in active military service with the U .S . Navy for the past 12 years , I have seen my share of the world as I served 3 tours of duty in Iraq and 2 of the same in Afghanistan . Currently I am stationed in Bahrain and feeling homesick because I miss my mom so much while stationed away from home . This is why I take every opportunity possible to go on vacation with my mom . These little trips are important to us because it gives

us time alone to be able to reignite the mother-daughter bond . It helps us catch up with each others lives while we were apart without the distraction of family duties , chores , and friends . Even though we went to Hawaii 2 years ago , that does not rate at the best time of my life spent with my mom . That honor goes to our photographic safari vacation in Johannesburg , South Africa . The reason we both decided that trip would be a good idea is because we are both huge animal lovers and everybody knows that Africa is the best place to see the animals in the wild . So we took the vacation time and did something that we had always wanted to do

A typical day for us during this vacation went this way . We would get our wake up call , at 5 :00 AM . Coffee followed at 5 :30 then we would depart for our morning game drive and have breakfast when we returned at about 9 :00 AM . We could do anything we wanted for the rest of the day until 3 :30 when our afternoon game drive was scheduled . We would be back in the evening with enough time to prepare for the 8 :30 PM bonfire dinner

The first thing the front desk had us do was sign a waiver indicating that we knew the risks involved when watching wild game and that we would not sue them for any bodily injury that we might be subjected to We were not really paying attention to what we were signing so , when it seemed during the trip that a leopard was about to have me for lunch , I found my thoughts trying to recall the content of the waiver as the leopard nearly landed on my head ! Since we were traveling in open land rovers , there was really nothing there to separate us for the animals So , if our tour guide and security guy ever let their guard down , a lion would jump right into our car and have a very tummy filling snack . Thank heavens we were staying at a private game reserve so the animals thought nothing anymore of having people staring at them and taking their pictures . I do believe that a few of them even posed when they saw my camera . It was hard to feel threatened by the animals because they never displayed any signs of their animal instinct to attack us...
