Comparison and Contrast between June and Vera In Best Quality , Amy Tan tries to show the

difficult and traumatic relationship between a thirty six year old rebellious daughter June and her domineering Chinese mother . In A Dill Pickle , Katherine Mansfield demonstrates a coincidental reunion between two old lovers after six years Vera , often finds herself unsure of her feelings towards her old lover . She cannot decide throughout the conversation with her old lover sitting across from her on the table whether she wants to hate him or love him . She sees him have a soft corner for her at some point in the conversation but at other instances she finds him mocking her . Vera is very fond of traveling . She lights up at the mention of the man s travels to Russia June has had a difficult adolescence . Her mother tried to instill traditional Chinese values in her whilst living in a typical American society . She endures a wide variety of generational differences and cultural distinctions between her mother and herself As soon as Vera sits on table she finds her old lover recollecting the past wistfully . She still finds herself hating the way he interrupted her while talking June in the beginning and middle of the story dislikes her mother very much . When Waverly openly criticizes June s work her mother never runs for her defense . Instead , she agrees that her daughter is not as sophisticated as Waverly . Despite her hatred she finds herself wanting her mother s approval . She buys China for her but her mother never uses it . She hates crabs but eats it so her mother stays happy with her Vera and June are both single women with their own vices Vera is superficial because she is instantly impressed with the man s expensive cigarettes , clothes and stories of travels around the world . June on the hand is insecure about her skills and abilities . She competes with her cousin Waverly and takes her criticism too seriously . She wants to be like Waverly and work at a larger firm . She questions her own ability as a copywriter Both women are extremely sensitive to their surroundings . They are imaginative and introspective . June has childhood stories of making a crab her pet .
