In the epic Beowulf , Grendel is depicted as a monstrous that keeps supernatural power and is shown as invulnerable to weapons that are employed by human beings to encounter the monsters . He attacks the hall that is constructed by King Hroogar

when people sleep . The hall is named as Heorot (Stanley 1976 . People sing and enjoy in the hall but after the continuous attacks by Grendel , they are frightened and leave the hall secluded (Anderson , et . al 2004 . Grendel is unable to attack the king because the king 's throne is guarded by a potent god , who keeps the capability of eradicating Grendel (Crossley-Holland and Mitchell 1968 Therefore , the king has no vulnerability because of Grendel but his men are devoured by the grand monster . The king gets disturbed because of this state of affairs

Beowulf , who is the protagonist of the epic , listens about the obliteration done by Grendel and gets ready for facing the monster and to take away the pains of the king . He reaches the Heorot with the allowance of his king with his men . During their sleep , Grendel arrives and devours one man of Beowulf (Anderson , et . al 2004 . Beowulf fights the monster without any armaments because the monster is invulnerable to the armaments . Beowulf 's men try to help Beowulf but cannot do so Beowulf fights the monster and at last rips away his arm from his shoulder (Stanley 1976 . The monster after getting deprived of his arm escapes from the location but he is unable to endure the injury and dies after reaching his abode

After the death of her son , Grendel 's mother is infuriated and she reaches the Heorot , the other night when people are sleeping and she avenges Grendel 's death by killing Aeschere , who is the most trustworthy warrior of the king . Beowulf and his men follow to her abode that is an eerie lake (Crossley-Holland and Mitchell 1968 . Beowulf takes a powerful sword and gets into the lake for combating Grendel 's mother Grendel 's mother is depicted as much more powerful and potent as compared to her son (Owen-Crocker 2002 . He is attacked by Grendel 's mother twice adversely but he is safeguarded because of his armor . Their fight takes place at the bed of the lake where there are skeletons of killed men and also of Grendel . Beowulf 's sword do not help him and he takes a sword from the arsenal of Grendel 's mother , which is so powerful that it helps Beowulf in killing Grendel 's mother (Anderson , et . al 2004
