Behaviors in Organizations
Adult development theory can be very useful for coaching executives The theory provides the foundation as to how people develop Furthermore , expansion of such theory has produced a division of adult development into three different levels , instrumental , social and self-authoring growth (Helsing , D , Drago-Severson , Kegan , 2007 Knowing what happens at these levels will provide valuable information about an individual . Consequently , armed with such information , a coach can pinpoint exact areas that require attention and where there exists a necessity to address certain problems I agree with Ken that the adult development

theory can be utilized in coaching . The theory provides an avenue for a deeper understanding of the growth and development of an individual . This can be used to examine the needs of the person
The way I see it , coaches need to be aware of the levels or stages in adult development . This is because people who come from different levels require different coaching approaches . That is why the understanding of the said levels is an integral part of coaching . Furthermore , coaching is individualized and must cater to the specific needs of person . There is no manual that a coach can use to help the person grow for coaching must be viewed as a means to help individuals address specific problem areas . Each person has his own needs . Thus , he requires a unique kind of coaching just like other individuals . As such , it is necessary that a coach understands the way by which adults develop in to determine how to address an individual 's problem . Just as in the humanistic approach the forward progress lies not with the coach but with the person being coached . As a coach we have to be patient and listen to the person to formulate a plan for forward progress
