Beautiful mind

Describe the characters in the film and disease / dis of mental illness

The main characters in the film are John Nash , Alicia Nash , William Parcher , Charles Herman , and Marcee . Other supporting characters are Dr Rosen , Hansen , Sol , and Bender . John Nash is a mathematical genius who has been obsessed with his search for a truly original idea as his legacy . Alicia Nash is his who has never failed to support him . The imaginary characters are William Parcher , a government agent who recruited Nash as a spy for the Defense Department Charles Herman

, who was described as his prodigal roommate and has been Nash 's best friend through out his graduate student life and Marcee , Charles ' niece . The mental illness that he experienced is a form of schizophrenia more medically referred to as paranoid schizophrenia . This is a type of schizophrenia that is mostly characterized by delusions of persecution jealousy , or grandeur . The symptoms that were exhibited in the film are understated , compared to what disease could actually inflict , but basically covers the idea of the symptoms

Define the signs and symptoms the character is experiencing

In the film itself , John Nash experienced delusions where he believed that Parcher , Charles , and Marcee exist . He is talking to them , and treats them as if they are real persons . It can be observed that different personas have different effect on him . In the case of Parcher what he felt was the delusion of being persecuted , being chased . Charles persona is the one that seems to be exhibiting his unconscious desire to ease up with his academic search for true idea . Charles is the lighter ' side , so to speak , of Nash . The general sense of the symptoms experienced by Nash is those delusions leading to hostility unfocused anxiety , aggressiveness , and in severe case , which actually happened later on in the film , detachment of consciousness from reality

Evaluate in your own terms what the dis is and what you believe the causes may have been from (genetic , environment , chemical etc ) Provide examples

I think the dis is caused by psychosocial or environmental factors as well as genetic factors . In terms if the genetic factors , this can be observed in the case of many schizophrenic patients who have one relative or family member who also have the same dis . In the case of John Nash , in true life , he has a son who is also experiencing schizophrenia . The genetic factors go as far as to making the person susceptible to the dis , but not making them really exposed to the illness . It is the psychosocial factors that make the person suffer from schizophrenia . Relating this again o the film or the case of Nash , I would say that Nash was really vulnerable to the dis in the first place . What made it developed were the environmental factors - his desire to find a truly original idea , to be the best in his field . These desires triggered his other personas causing him to be delusional
