The development of telecommunication technology has provided many benefits for people to share ideas , exchange information , and manage works remotely . However , telecommunication technology is a hardware that people or users who employ the technology need to master how to communicate effectively with their colleagues , family , and friends . The situation highlights the ideas that there is a big different between communication and telecommunications

By meaning , telecommunication deals with the emission /transmission and reception of ideas and information in the form

of sounds , images , text signs and many others by delivering them through various telecommunication media . The transmission media includes cable /wireline (optical fiber , unshielded twisted pair , coaxial , to name a few ) and wireless (satellite communication , microwave radio , and WiMAX that stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access

Meanwhile , communication refers to the exchange of information between two people or more . Although communications seems not to be as complicated as telecomunications but in fact the communication skills have wider impact in succeeding the business deals , romance , and work relationship , for instances

Concerning the communications , this will discuss about barriers of effective communications that happened especially in a workpklace since at that place , the lack of effective communications has profound impact to the corporate performance . Therefore , effective communication is likely to deal with the creation of attratcive pleasing working environment

Barriers to Effective Communications

As explained above , the advancement of communication does not mean that there are no barriers in communications . According to JISC RSC Scotland N E (2007 , several factors influence the effectiveness of communications they can be categorized into three main factors physical barriers , system design faults and additional barriers . In addition , there are also other barriers those common barriers such as culture , language , ethics , and many others

Physical Barriers

This type of barriers is often because of the nature of the environment (JISC RSC Scotland N E , 2007 . For instances , a company may located in five-storey building . The company has many departments that located in different level in the building , each has tens to hundreds people . We can imagine that there will be some miscommunication when they meet in a forum or a sharing session since they rarely meet and talk

Another situation occurs when the company has many departments each has particular business process and objective . When staffs of the organization , says ones from sales department try to interact with their counterparts in the technical departments the communication may find great barriers since each party has different objective and the characteristics of people in the two departments are also different as well . Technical staffs tend to be straightforward while sales staffs have tendency to do small talks when dealing with people

The main causes of this problem may be the failure of managements to bridge the different by employing suitable telecommunication technology and encourage their employees to use the telecommunication tools and gadgets effectively and efficiently (JISC RSC Scotland N E , 2007 .
