He has gambling debts which continues to increase through time . In his job , he has a set of particularly strange actions thought to be misguided and foolish

When the Lieutenant locates the men who raped the nun , he lets them go This decision is in agreement with what the nun wanted . This is in contrast with his superior judgment . This shows the higher extent of forgiveness where the lieutenant made the decision despite of the possibility of earning a lot and pay all his debts . This is a quick turnaround for his character in the sense of morale
