Genesis is largely historical narrative . It provides the foundation on which the remainder of the Bible rests . It is believed that Genesis was written by Moses around 1440 B .C , and is most likely based on revelations from God as well as oral and written history . Exodus is a continuation of the historical narrative seen in Genesis . As with Genesis , it is believed Exodus was written around 1440 B .C . by Moses . Like Genesis , it is most likely based on revelations from God , as well as oral and written history . The historical backdrop of this book is Jacob and his family migrating to Egypt to escape famine in Canaan four centuries earlier . Unfortunately , the land that seemed to be their friend transformed into their enemy , as the descendants of Jacob and his people became slaves to the Egyptians .
