Aztec is uncertain , as per legends the Aztec 's place of origin was Aztl`an , some where north of the Valley of Mexico . Some experts suggest that it could be as far north as South Western United States and some others say that it could be a mythical place . The mythical story of these places are recorded in a number of codices from spanish colonial era , the Aubin Codex and Boturini Codex . In 1810 Alexander von Humboldt originatedmthe modern usage of Aztec ' as a collective term (Berdan , et al ,1996 ,2005 . Based on these codices as well as other histories , it appears that Mexicans arrived at Chapultepec in or around 1248 . The nucleus of Aztec was the valley of Mexico , which contained many city - states , the most powerful one was Culhuacan to the south and Azcapotzalco to the west . The Tepanecs of Azcapotzalco expelled the Mexicas from Chapultepec . In 1299 Culhuacan ruler Cocoxtli gave them permission to settle in the empty barrens of Tizapan where they assimilated into Culhuacan culture . After 1521 Spanish forces and their allies conquered Tenochtitlan leading to the end of Aztec dominion and they founded the New Mexico city at the site of the ruined Aztec capital (Smith , 1984
