I heard today that Moses , and several of the others , has run away Aggy told me this morning , when I past by , that they stole a gun from out of the young master 's bedroom during the night , and some food and supplies from the main kitchen - that 'll upset the cook . The whole plantation is in uproar . I hope they don 't get caught

Moses did say he was going to do it - I heard

him and the others talking - but I wasn 't sure if they really would . They 've been thinking about it ever since they heard that John Murray has offered freedom for slaves , in exchange for them fighting for the King . But I don 't think they care too much about the British , or about the fact that the whole country has been under martial law for some months . We still haven 't heard anything from David . It seems so long since he left , and yet it 's not even a month . I know that mum still misses him terribly , although she doesn 't say anything , but I can hear her crying in the night . Why David ? Why couldn 't it have been one of the other young males ? Virginia , Winter 1777

The master is having guests for Christmas and Aggy , and several of the other female slaves have been preparing the bedrooms , cleaning , or helping the cook in the kitchen . Oh , the sight of the house as everything is getting prepared . Sweetmeats , pastries , and jellies fill the larder shelves , along with salted joints of meats and whole bacons and the aroma of Christmas baking just fills the air . I swear they have enough for a hundred guests

The whole atmosphere has changed with Christmas approaching - well that and the fact that we got news of David , that really made everyone 's day . I 'm glad that his doing alright , and that he has found a wife Perhaps we 'll hear that he 's going to be a father again . I know that mum still finds it difficult to know that he 's so far away
