But I don 't think they care too much about the British , or about the fact that the whole country has been under martial law for some months . What has any child here got to look forward too , except a lifetime of slavery ? But Aggy 's pleased . She keeps walking around with her hands on her stomach , and a secret kind of smile on her face . They may not recognize her as my wife , but we both know that she is (Gary B . Nash , p .17 , 1991 . We still haven 't heard anything from David . It seems so long since he left , and yet it 's not even a month . I know that mum still misses him terribly , although she doesn 't say anything , but I can hear her crying in the night . Why David ? Why couldn 't it have been one of the other young males ? Aggy says it 's because of his breeding potential , which I suppose is probably right . My poor , handsome , young brother . I hope he 's alright (Archiving Early America , Online Article , 2007 . Virginia , Winter 1777 The master is having guests for Christmas and Aggy , and several of the other female slaves have been preparing the bedrooms , cleaning , or helping the cook in the kitchen . Oh , the sight of the house as everything is getting prepared . Sweetmeats , pastries , and jellies fill the larder shelves , along with salted joints of meats and whole bacons , and the aroma of Christmas baking just fills the air . I swear they have enough for a hundred guests ! The whole atmosphere has changed with Christmas approaching - well , that and the fact that we got news of David , that really made everyone 's day . I 'm glad that his doing alright , and that he has found a wife . Perhaps we 'll hear that he 's going to be a father again . I know that mum still finds it difficult to know that he 's so far away . Aggy got whipped again a few days ago , for stealing . She never seems... |
